Decarcerate PA (DPA) is a grassroots campaign working to end mass incarceration in Pennsylvania. DPA was formed in 2011 to challenge the expansion of Pennsylvania’s prison system amid drastic cuts to public education, social services and health care. Seeing a chance to shift the state’s criminal justice priorities, DPA set out to build a campaign to shrink the prison system and expand the community institutions that actually keep us safe—education, housing, reentry, and health care. The organization seeks mechanisms to build whole, healthy communities and believes that imprisonment exacerbates the problems we face. Their work is guided by a three point platform that demands that Pennsylvania stop building prisons, reduce the prison population, and reinvest money in our schools and communities. The platform has been endorsed by a coalition of statewide organizations and individuals seeking an end to mass incarceration and the harm it brings our communities.
