The Early Years

The extraordinary early history of our congregation
At first, dreams seem impossible, then improbable, and eventually inevitable. Christopher Reeves
This history is dedicated to all the early stewards of the Unitarian Universalists of the Cumberland Valley with our thanks and tribute for their pioneering, innovative, and determined efforts—whether or not each of those helpful individuals are herein named. Consider this history a work in progress, with updates in the future. If we inadvertently left anyone out, or omitted part of the story, please let us know (see last page).
Foreword
The "Building Our Future" workshops during the fall and winter of 2002–03 attended by more than fifty UUCV members demonstrated how we’ve experienced several distinct congregational growth "time chapters"—with new members relating best to "their" time chapter, whether it was at the very beginning of our history—meetings at the Ruby-Baird Farm and the Quaker Meeting House—or when we met at Denny Hall at Dickinson College, or whether they joined us at the meetinghouse in Boiling Springs.
It’s important to understand our history in order to celebrate our successes and fully appreciate the value of our current meetinghouse.
